Sheidow Park was built across a ridge running down toward Gulf St Vincent, and the terrain does more to shape its pest problems than anything else. Blocks were cut and filled to make them level, which left the suburb full of retaining walls, rockeries and stepped garden beds. Every one of those is a dry, sheltered cavity, and redbacks colonise them faster than they colonise the house itself.

The same cut-and-fill explains the ant pressure that dominates what residents here actually search for. Paved driveways and terraced beds sit on disturbed fill with plenty of voids beneath, so colonies establish close to the slab and forage indoors along the easiest path. Surface spraying moves the trail without touching the nest, which is why the problem so often returns a fortnight later. Our ant control works the other way round — bait the foragers, let them carry it home, remove the colony.

Most of the housing stock went up between the mid-1980s and the late 1990s. Those homes are now well past the service life of any original soil barrier, and the stepped construction common here can bury a slab edge on the uphill side where nobody would think to look. That is the first place we check.
